When I met Gary Gilman, in 1988, he was a master carpenter with years of work in the construction industry. I was young and relatively inexperienced, but Gary agreed to take me on as his apprentice. We worked well together and decided to incorporate it in 1990. We grew over the years through word of mouth, repeat customers, and a nascent relationship with a few architects. The growth meant we could add contacts, talented staff, and better business practices, as well as the knowledge and skillset to take on larger, more sophisticated projects. We now employ 30 craftspeople, all with a desire to deliver high-quality work and a high-quality work environment.
We learned very early that business is about relationships. We covet all our relationships, from clients to architects to designers to subcontractors. There are many satisfying moments when complex plans come to life and create someone’s home. But, the most satisfying aspects of my work are the relationships I’ve built with like-minded individuals — individuals who take pride in their work and pride in the process.
Perhaps I wasn’t the greatest carpentry apprentice, but between project management, estimating, and business development, I found my place. Today I focus primarily on business development, where I get to share 30 years of hard work and quality products. And, I still get to build relationships.
When not focused on work, I spend as much time as possible with my family and friends. My wife and I enjoy traveling and scuba diving. I also love to cook, cut and split wood, and read.
